Treatment tips

Always speak to your doctor or healthcare team as your first step in dealing with a UTI. These are tips only and not a substitute for medical advice.

UTIs are common and some people find they keep coming back despite treatment.

However, most people eventually find a solution that works for them. Different remedies seem to work for different people, so if you are struggling don’t despair, keep going until you find something that helps you.

Medical treatment options

  • Start by going to your doctor. They may prescribe you antibiotics. They can also advise you on how to proceed with your self-catheterization
  • If you are given antibiotics, make sure you complete the full course
  • Return to your healthcare professional if symptoms don’t improve

Over the counter remedies

  • Over the counter solutions can help relieve symptoms by neutralizing your urine. For a home remedy version, some people find drinking a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda mixed with water provides relief of symptoms (although it may taste thoroughly disgusting)

People’s tips

A collection of common tips and advice from regular sufferers.

  • Drinking plenty of water may help you feel better
  • Sit in a warm bath
  • Some healthcare providers may suggest drinking cranberry juice, eating frozen cranberries, or taking cranberry extract or Waterfall D-Mannose (a natural sugar that may prevent bacteria sticking to the bladder) to help treat and prevent UTIs. However, depending on other treatments you take this may not be recommended for you. It may also be expensive. Speak to your doctor to determine what might be right for you

Mind over bladder

Although it can feel impossible at times, try not to let a UTI win by making you miserable. A practical and positive approach really can help you feel better.

  • Watch a film, read a book, or try taking your mind off your discomfort
  • Try to keep positive. You will get through this infection and it will feel great when it’s gone
