How do I cath in a public restroom?

Being able to cath in a public bathroom may seem like a daunting task. However, it can also be the most liberating step as a catheter user. Feeling comfortable cathing in a public setting can help give you confidence to go wherever you want, whenever you want. Here are some tips to help make that process easy and discreet:

Always carry extra supplies, including any accessories you typically use as part of your cathing routine such as cleansing wipes, antibacterial hand gel, or a compact mirror.
You can never be too clean. Be sure to wash your hands with soap before and after you use your catheter.

  • Don’t overthink it. Use the same cathing technique you would use at home. Re-purposing a bag hung on the door or paper towels on your lap, can act as a replacement shelf if needed.
  • Being discreet just takes a little creativity! Utilise your clothing when you can. Whether it’s a long-sleeved shirt, jacket, belt or tall boots, your clothing can help to conceal your supplies. Catheters are flexible enough to also wrap around your wrist or place in your waistband, just be sure not to kink the catheter when rolling it up.
  • Re-purpose easy to find items such as an eyeglass case, a pencil or cosmetic case, travel toothbrush or soap holders as discreet carrying cases for catheters and supplies. Also, fanny packs are back in style and are a great option when you’re travelling and you need more pockets!
  • Stay calm. Take a deep breath, this can be as easy as cathing in your own home. Other people are likely focusing on what they’re doing and aren’t paying attention to what’s going on in the stall next to them.
  • Practice when you’re at home. Think about a cathing routine that you know will work for you when you’re out in public and take note of the supplies you’ll need to help you be more prepared for when you are in a public setting.
